Mayfield is a town in parts of Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Mayfield was founded by John Mayfield in 1819 as a trading post on the Ohio River. He named his settlement after General Carlisle Austin's old home in England. The first permanent settler in what is now Mayfield was Capt. John Gist who arrived in 1796 with his family from Virginia and built a cabin near present-day Mount Pleasant. In 1800, George Thomas established a small Ferrytown tavern here which served as the nucleus for what would become Mayfield Township. A post office called Mayfield was established in 1812, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1829, Surveyor General James Wilkinson initiated plans to plat out new townships west of Louisville on land that had been donated by General David Dixon for the establishment of schools and other public works within Jefferson County.. On February 5, 1830, Wilkinson submitted to the Kentucky House of Representatives a map of new Townships called "Mayflower". The name may have come from early settler Janis Barber who resided near present-day Mount Pleasant and bore this name during her lifetime; or alternatively it may be derived from Majestic Horse Race Course located nearby (now closed). Dixon donated an additional 400 acres (160 hectares) to make up what are now Elizabethtown Township and more than 20 pioneer families began settling there around 1830 including those associated with Captain Gist's tavern - all except one family who moved to Elizabethtown soon afterwards because they could not obtain enough water rights for their farmsteads on the riverbank where they had constructed them. By 1838 most residents living west of Louisville were either farmers or mechanics working for local transportation companies such as Roadmaster John McClendon or James Wilkinson himself when he started his own construction company doing work for both local government officials as well as private individuals east of town limits; but when Clay Market opened up along US 65 about 2½ miles east of town Limits on April 25th1838 many easterners decided to move into Mayfield instead due to its healthy climate and proximity to important facilities like Clay Market while also enjoying easy access to downtown Louisville via US 65 which became known locally as "the Main Street" It wasn't until after Indian Removal that large numbers black Americans started moving into these communities especially since much land still remained unclaimed following America's purchase of Louisiana from France during the Mexican–American War some 25 years earlier After yearslong negotiations resulting in several revisions to KRS #1B zoning regulations governing agricultural production within Jeffco areas including prohibition against excessive building heights/widths throughout any portion thereof without prior approval from county board & director etc., groundbreaking took place Wednesday morning September 5th2006 on beautifully situated . . . 4500 acre lot located just southwest corner OF MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP & ELIZABETHTOWN TOWNSHIP state highway 12E intersecting Rte 12W just east OF MAYFIELD PKwy
Mayfield was laid out in 1821, and became a county seat in 1825. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Kentucky. The first white settler in Mayfield was James Mclntyre, who arrived with his family from Virginia in 1824.
