Mayfield is a small town in Bourbon County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Bourbon County and home to the Mayfield School District. The town was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1821. It became a town in 1839, and it became a city in 1907. The name of the original settlement may be derived from word "mahill," meaning "sweet." In 1840, Elijah Hicks started a distillery called Hickson's Brewery and Distillery which still exists today as an agricultural business with three production buildings along side their farmstead house which dates back to 1863 (the current structure replaced an earlier brick building that served as a distillery). Hickson also founded what is now known as Mayfield Masonic Lodge No. 1 (later Mayfield Lodge No 3) in 1840 while he resided there with his family for several years prior to moving them to Lexington due to increasing political instability at this time in bourbon County caused by claims of land fraudulence among some of its prominent families including those of General Andrew Jackson and James Ketchum Sr.. In 1845-46 Elijah Hicks' son John Fenton erected the present courthouse on Main Street adjacent to his father's distillery property; this building still stands today as one of downtown Mayfields most conspicuous landmarks although all other remnants date back only to 1924 when it underwent significant renovation/upkeep resulting in its return as one of downtowns most important commercial districts once again! Mayfield was founded in 1792 by John Mayfield and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Mayfield's home in the county of Cumberland. In 1814, the population of Mayfield was about 100 people and it had a school, a Methodist church, and a blacksmith shop. The first post office in Mayfield was established in 1816. In 1825, the first store opened in the town. In 1830, the first courthouse was built in town. By 1840, there were about 150 people living in Mayfield. On November 1, 1845, Kentucky became a state and on December 6th of that year, Mayfield incorporation as an incorporated village status took effect with its own council system and mayor/council members. On October 5th of 1850 (the date still used to mark anniversary days of incorporation), the first railroad arrived to Mayfield from Louisville and through it came waves of new settlers looking for land to farm or build homes on.
