Mayfield is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mayfield was founded in 1827 by John Mayfield and his wife Catharine. John Mayfield had come to America from Yorkshire, England with his family when he was thirteen years old. He became a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington and helped found that church as well. In 1836, John and Catharine mayfield bought out the initial membership in the First Baptist Church and established their own congregation. They continued to serve as pastors of that church until its merger into the Lexington BibleChurch in 1954. John Mayfield died in 1865 and Catharine married Drury Witherspoon two years later; they would have nine children together before her death in 1901. Drury Witherspoon remained active throughout his life as an Episcopal priest for many years; he also served on several boards of directors for various businesses including Dixie Paper Co., Paintshop Inc., Louisville Gas Light Co., Kentucky Forestry Association, and Crystal Carbide Corp.. The townspeople were so grateful for what Drury Witherspoon did for them that they named their new post office after him – Witherspoon Heights – which still stands today. The post office has been in operation since 1907. The townspeople built a manual schoolhouse on land donated by Judge James Guthrie back in 1839; it burned down but was rebuilt soon after with more room inside due to strong demand from students! It continued serving as a school until 1960 when it closed because of budget cutsbacks within Clay County government! In 1961-1962, during the days leading up to statehood for Kentucky, much work took place around Mayfields Main Street Railway Station which housed both local passengers coming into town on stagecoaches (via Stage Coach Drive) as well as visitors who were coming through on cars headed east or west bound from western KY towns like Paducah or Logansport - one such passenger stop being located just across Main Street from where we now stand! This stop marked not only a major event/purpose but also an important point along KY's railroad history leading up to becoming a stately capital city surrounded by beautiful countryside

Mayfield is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Mayfield in 1821. He named it after his father's birthplace, Mayfield Hall on the Cumberland River in England. In 1825, Mayfield donated land to make into a town square and built a courthouse and six other buildings. The first post office opened in 1827. In 1831, the Mayfields sold their land to John Fenton for $8,000$. Fenton began to plat out the town and renamed it "Mayfield". He platted out five blocks of downtown and built fifty-six houses. He also started a school that served students from kindergarten through high school. By 1840, Mayfield had become an established community with its own storekeepers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Fenton died in 1857 and his widow continued to run the community until her death in 1860. She bequeathed most of her estate toMayfield Township schools which continue operation today as public schools under one roof with over 1,500 students across twelve campuses including four high schools (including one coeducational). The first fire department was organized in 1865 when two men from neighboring towns set up a pump shop near where they now stand on Main Street while waiting for their water wagon to arrive from Glasgow downstream; they were able to put out the first call for help on July 3rd 1865 - this event is still celebrated every year by hosting an open house/festivities around Independence Day at various places within the township! In 1898-99 when Widespread Panic played live at Paducah Civic Auditorium all day long(?), locals gathered around doughnuts available for sale during intermission only because there wasn't any food or beverage served inside due to Prohibition regulations! In response management decided against serving anything alcoholic during prohibition - this policy has been followed ever since! Municipal government changed hands several times before coming under control of what is now known as Kentuckiana Inc., an affiliate company controlled by billionaire media mogul James Dolan who boughtout all but one ofthe township's trustees in 2007 According to Forbes Magazine’s 2013 list of “America’s 100 Best Large Cities”Kentuckiana Inc ranked #51st among cities with populations over 250,000—a tick below Louisville but above Lexington (#48) – making it America’s smallest city outside New York City . Accordingly effective January 1st 2009 changes took effect having 2 trustee members appointed instead of 1 each & 5 voting members instead of 9 like prior years which increased veto power & decreased quorum size from 15 required plus 2 alternate members per ward vs 12 currently mandated . New board meeting location: First floor multipurpose room located just east off I-65 next door to Subway restaurant complex & across from Jefferson County Courthouse
Mayfield was founded in 1812 by John Mayfield and his wife Anna. John Mayfield, a Revolutionary War veteran, started the town on a small piece of land he owned near the current day intersection of Main Street and West Price Street. In 1824, the town was renamed to honor General James Henson. In 1827, the town passed an ordinance that banned slavery and allowed free blacks to live in the community. The first white settler in Mayfield was Isaac Lovett, who arrived in 1828 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on what is now Price Street. The first post office was established at Price in 1830. The first store opened for business in 1830 at what is now Main Street- opposite today's Baptist Church. A school was established in 1832 at what is now White House Road. In 1840, Mayfield had two churches- one Protestant and one Methodist- both of which were affiliated with the United Methodists denomination. In 1865, when Centralia School District No. 1 formed within central Kentucky educational boundaries, Mayfield became its second school district after Unionville School District No as part of that district's consolidation with Morehead County schools proper following passage of state constitutional amendment providing for such consolidations statewide under then Superintendentof Schools Driscoll’s plan (see also: Centralia School District). A new elementary school building replaced existing facilities at White House Road and First Avenue between 1911 and 1912; this building still stands today as One Fourth Street Elementary School.. A new high school building replaced existing facilities at Main and White House Roads between 1926 and 1927; this building still stands today as Mayflower High School.. After more than thirty years without any major alterations or expansions to its infrastructure – including only three years (1929-1930) during which time it served students primarily through graded correspondence courses - Centralia City Council authorized construction of a brand new $5 million facility designed by architect Jules Cashner that included both primary classrooms (grades K-4), a gymnasium (for grades 5-8), offices/administrative spaces for city officials(including county commissioners & city managers), a large auditorium/recital hall with stage/podium for city concerts & other events, an outdoor amphitheater capable of seating up to 2500 spectators (now used as parkland), plus auxiliary personnel quarters for up to 500 employees - including modern day air conditioning - Centralia City Hall finally opened its doors on March 6th 1931 serving residents of central KY until it closed effective June 15th 2001 due largely to budget cuts resultant from increased competition from neighboring towns within their respective educational districts Broad Ripple Township & Henderson County Schools having attained legal status as “civic institutions” pursuant to State Supreme Court Order #2107 dated December 17th 1990 – opening ceremonies were held on January 3rd 1991 followed by dedication ceremonies presided over by Mayor Loyd Salyer attended by Govt Officials Don Steffenbach & Harlan Stephenson
