The history of gun lights in Mayfield, Kentucky can be traced back to the early days of firearms. One of the first firearms in that region was a stocky, muzzle-loading rifle called the “Kentucky Rifle”. That weapon was used by Native Americans to hunt game and capture horses. The rifle was modifications of an earlier design, developed by a man named John Winfield Scott. In 1851, a group of men from Kentucky traveled to Mexico City to purchase some rifles for use against Texan settlers. While there, they met someone who would play a significant role ingun lights history in Mayfield: José Joaquín de Armas y Costilla. Armas had been born in 1795 in the town of Zaragoza, Spain and had immigrated to America at age sixteen. He became involved with Mexican independence movements and eventually joined General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as his right-hand man during the Mexican War (1846-1848). In 1851, Armas returned to America and founded what would become Colt Firearms Company in Hartford, Connecticut. At Colt Firearms Company, he designed and manufactured revolvers and pistols under his own name. Armas’ revolver designs were particularly successful and helped him establish himself as one of America’s leading handgun manufacturers – until his death in 1881 at the age of seventy-six years old. After Armas’ death, Colt Firearms Company passed away too; it is now part of Walther Arms Corporation. Through these advancements (and others), gun lights gradually began becoming more common throughout America throughout the nineteenth century – until they reached their peak around World War II when many people started using them for target shooting purposes due to their effectiveness at distance (and because machine guns were not yet available).

Mayfield is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mayfield was founded in 1802 by John Mayfield and his family. Mayfield's father, James Mayfield, had been a Revolutionary War soldier and Surveyor General for the state of Kentucky. He died in 1798. His son, John Mayfield II, became a lawyer and judge in Louisville before moving to Mayfield in 1824 to start his own law practice. In 1827 he married Frances Fenton and they moved to live there permanently. They had six children: James (1828-1911), Charles (1830-1910), Margaret Caroline (1832-1912), Eliza Jane (1834-1900), Thomas Wistar (1836-1920) and John Wesley (1838-1920). The town of MayFIELD was organized on December 12, 1831 under the name "Plymouth". On February 14, 1835 it changed its name to "MayFIELD" after James Hogg who donated land for the community center on what is now Main Street. The first post office opened in this town on October 7, 1840 under the name "Plymouth", but changed its name to "MayFIELD" again on January 3, 1861 due to lobbying by local farmers who wanted their village renamed after them rather than Plymouth which they considered too far away from home. The first school building was built in 1865 as part of an effort sponsored by Mrs Elizabeth Kappeler which saw the opening of two schools within five years; one for white students only and one for black students as well as girls; both were located on Second Street between Highways 4 & 5E today known as Old Main Street senior high school with additions including football/soccer fields across from it modern day gymnasium on First Street east of IHOP restaurant today known as EastMiddle School also serving lunch during school hours until about 1975 when these buildings closed down due to arson trying by grade school kids back then
Mayfield was founded by John Mayfield in 1775. He moved the post office from Lexington to Mayfield in 1836. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, a hero of the Revolutionary War.
