Mayfield is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,434 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Mayfield was Levi Burnett in 1814. Burnett's home and barn were built on a farm where he raised hogs and pigs for his own cooking and use. He also fished and hunted in the area. A post office called Mayfield was established in 1827, but it never had any mail sent through it. The first settlers children were born while their parents were away to do work on the farm or to help with family activities. A store opened at what is now Main Street and Broadway in 1835 by Elijah Pendergast and others as "Pendergast's Store". By 1840, there were six stores in the town with a population of 350 people. In 1845, David Waddell purchased land from John Taylor near present day Park Road/US 421 for $2 per acre (about ). He Fairview Cottage was built on this land which served as his plantation house until 1886 when he sold it to Averill Harriman who renamed it Harriman-Mayfield Plantation after himself. In 1865, Mayfield received its municipal charter from Kentucky General Assembly #3 providing for township government with three trustees elected at large plus one mayor who serves a four-year term renewable by election only; however no buildings were erected until 1870 when the first schoolhouse was built opposite Main Street corner (it would be moved to its current location about two decades later). The early years of Mayfield’s history are marked by great changes brought about by changing railroad traffic patterns that diverted travelers southward along US 421 instead of northward through Hardin County towards Lexington et al., bypassing downtown Mayfield altogether during most weeks during summer months; thus leaving much farmland unoccupied resulting in shuttered businesses throughout most of the year creating an entrepreneurial atmosphere among many farmers leading to increased trade within town limits not just during harvest season but year round…..One such business owner who benefited greatly from this situation is mentioned below: “Old Ben” Grimes whose gristmill operated successfully without interruption all winter long due largely to his horse power engine which ran constantly 24/7……...During prohibition days some residents joined local sheriffs departments as law enforcement officers making good money doing so although they could not drink alcohol……….Many businesses closed down because they could not compete with prices set by bootleggers selling merchandise smuggled into town….This type of business downturn usually led to more unemployment among these same men as well as other factors such as lack of available transportation or economic depression caused by overproduction…..Most recently another business relocated here from Louisville due to a decrease in demand for goods produced locally…..Today almost all residences have been replaced with single family homes…………………………………… comprehensive account can be found online at www.kyRegisteronline .com
