When the first settlers arrived in what is now Mayfield in 1821, they had only rifles and shotguns. They were not sure how to use them so they took them home with them. A man by the name of John Kline brought a cannon from Illinois and built a rifle range on his land near where the Mayfield Baptist Church now stands. The people of Mayfield began using guns for protection and hunting in 1825. In 1859, General David Hogg organized an expedition against the Indians at Fort Donelson. He requested that Major General Thomas J. Banks provide him with 20 men to help him carry out this mission, but Banks refused because he did not want any violence around his unit. After Hogg’s defeat at Fort Donelson, some of General Hogg’s men started bringing arms into the town and began calling themselves “The Gunners of Mayfield” or “The Riflemen of Mayfield.” In 1865, during the American Civil War, many mayfields residents volunteered to serve in Units B (Brigadiergeneral George Farragut) and C (Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt). These units fought at Petersburg and Atlanta before being disbanded due to lack of supplies or manpower after those cities were captured by Union forces. Mayfield continued to enjoy its gun culture until it was destroyed by fire on September 26th, 1907 which killed over 100 people including 50% of the town's population aged 15-34 years old!

Other early settlers were David Bledsoe, Elias Howe, Solomon Barnes and Job Stearns Mayfield was platted in 1824 by Pierre Bourque and Samuel Whitaker as a township under the name of "Belknap." The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "barking dog" or "fetch dog." However, no evidence has been found to support this theory During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Mayfield served as both Union and Confederate military headquarters for much of eastern Kentucky including parts of what is now Lexington Countyincluding Mayfield . On November 15th 1861 five soldiers from Mayfield were killed by Confederates during battle at Harrisonburg Kentucky while protecting General Robert E Lee In 1865 after the war ended, most of eastern Kentucky became Union territory

However, some residents decided to stay and continue developing their community until 1990 when they were amalgamated into the city of Louisville.
Mayfield is a town in and the county seat of Sullivan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area.
