When the Mayfield Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892, they were the first organized firearms club in Kentucky. The club enjoyed a long and successful history until it was disbanded in 1958. In Mayfield, Kentucky, a gun rights group organized a "T-shirt Takedown Day" to remove firearms from the hands of people who had not complied with state laws prohibiting the ownership of firearms. Mayfield is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonville, KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2000 Census, Mayfield had a total population of 798. In 2010, its population increased to 1,868 due to the opening of a new shopping center and other growth in the community. The town is located on State Route 259 across from Interstate 65 and just east of US 81. The first settlers in Mayfield were farmers who arrived in 1796 from Winchester Township, Pennsylvania. They began farming tobacco and corn on their lands which they became known as "Pike's Fields". In 1801 they organized as an independent township with three trustees who administered justice and conducted elections. By 1812 there were twelve households living in Mayfield Township with a total value of $1 worth of goods sold each year. In 1820 Mayfield Township was divided into two parts: Union Township (now Pike County) and Jackson Township (now Hardin County). Jackson Township continued to be part of Union Township until it was dissolved by order of then-President James K. Mayfield was founded by John Mayfield in 1821. The town was named for General George Washington. It is located in Bourbon County, Kentucky. When the United States acquired it during the Mexican-American War, the name of the town changed to Brownsville and then Mayfield after General James K. PolkTipsox Creek flows through its center. The post office at Mayfield was first established on July 1, 1827. Daniel Boone was born here on November 17th, 1775. His father, grandfather and other ancestors all lived in or around Mayfield before moving west to Kentucky when they were minors. When the Union Army arrived in Central America following the American Civil War, many soldiers brought their families with them as they left for Mexico City across the Rio Grande river on April 14th 1865. Among those who lost their lives were Captain Samuel Denton and his family including his wife Sarah and two children Samuel Jr., age 10 months old, and 11 year old Thomas Denton Jr.. They are buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Brownsville where General James K Polk also resteth eulogized them a few years later when he visited Brownstown Township which is adjacent to Elmwood Cemetery
Mayfield was founded in 1814 by John Mayfield and his family. The town grew quickly, and by 1830 had a population of over 200. In 1845, Mayfield became the county seat of Jefferson County. By 1860, the population had increased to 1,500 and by 1870 it had reached 4,000. In 1875, Mayfield was added to the United States Census as a result of its incorporation as a city. The city's growth continued until World War II when it all but disappeared due to its rural location. However, since then the city has experienced an awakening with new development including new housing developments and restaurants.
