Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. Mayfield is part of the Louisville metropolitan area and is served by the Metro Council. The land that makes up Mayfield was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. In 1802, General David Wilkinson founded what would become Mayfield as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The town grew quickly and by 1825 it had a population of over 2,000 people.During the 1830s and 1840s, many Native Americans were killed in what is now known as Indian War fought between American settlers and Native Americans in what is today Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1846, after being forced to cede all their lands to America through Treaty of Fort Gibson, most of present-day Mayfield reverted to British control under King George IV's proclamation of September 25th that year. By 1850 there were only about 50 residents left living in what would become Mayfield.The towns growth stopped due to difficult economic conditions during Reconstruction which followed America's Civil War (1861-1865). Many businesses closed because of lack of trade with new markets opened up due to reconstruction throughout much of the North and West while slave labor replaced some manufacturing jobs in those areas. During this time period many farmers turned their attention towards growing crops such as corn or wheat instead of manufactured goods such as textiles or housing products. However, even though economic conditions improved following Reconstruction, there were still few job opportunities for villagers despite advances made in transportation and communication technology."In 1870-71," wrote historian John Mearsheimer "the average white farmer produced about two bushels per acre...This level productivity could not be maintained without considerable inputs from labor suppliers abroad who brought agricultural equipment back into operation." Despite these advances however progress was slow due to technological limitations associated with railroad travel times which caused shipping tonnages on rivers increased tenfold when compared to other modes such as sailboats or canoes."In 1886," according to Mearsheimer "Mayhill’s last resident [John] Kapp came downriver from his farmstead above New Albany...He had just finished planting soybeans when he found out that river traffic had been diverted upstream along tracks built by CSS*H[eartbeater], one hundred miles away.'" Mayfield was founded in 1819 by John Mayfield and his wife Esther. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1827, Mayfield became the county seat of Butler County. By 1830, the population of Mayfield had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation recommending that Butler County be divided into two counties - Clay and Union - based on population size. The proposal failed to gain approval from Congress, but it did result in the creation of Butler and Pike Counties. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Kentucky, Mayfield residents took up arms against the North. After four days of fighting, Union forces drove Ewell out of town. On November 12th of that year, George Rogers Clark arrived in Lexington to deliver an address to a crowd celebrating the surrender of Confederate General Robert Ewell at Uniontown Cemetery. During his speech, Clark mentioned that "Mayfield is now within our lines" and added that "the citizens there will effectually support us". This event is credited with beginning what would become known as Lexington's political correctness movement. In 1870-72, Mayfields saw significant growth due to its role as a railway junction for trains travelling between Louisville and Nashville. By 1880-81, however,Mayfields' economic vitality had waned; its only industry still being agriculture. But by 1907-08 Mayfields had regained some importance as a manufacturing center thanks to new industries such as shoe manufacture and aircraft production plants located nearby at Wright Field and Dayton Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). However these industrial businesses eventually closed down during World War II; leaving little legacy behind aside from some scattered housing developments used as storage or military barracks until recently (euphemistically called "Old Town"). Today much of Old Town remains abandoned but contains valuable historical resources including numerous churches dating back to the late 19th century along with several early 21st century businesses like A&P grocery store which operated here until 1971 when it moved out into larger shopping malls elsewhere in downtown Lexington
Mayfield was founded in 1799 by George Mayfield and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after the General's field on which it was located. The first settler, James Farnsworth, arrived in 1800. In 1802, Isaac Mason and John McNutt also settled in the area. By 1810, there were twenty-six families living in Mayfield. By 1830, the population had grown to ninety-two people. In 1836, Mayfield became a county seat of Fayette County and remained so until 1840 when Jeffersonville became the new county seat. In 1850, the village of Mayfield burned down due to a fire that started while people were working on their farm outside the town limits. The community rebuilt and continued to grow until around 1900 when it began to decline because of resource depletion and other factors such as an increase in manufacturing within neighboring Jeffersonville.
