Mayfield is a town in Grayson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Mayfield was made by James Mayfield and others in 1811. A log cabin was built on the current site of Mayfield High School in 1814 by James Mayfield and his son-in-law Ephraim Hensley. The present high school, which opened in 1916, was built on land given to the school by Majestic Paper Company founder James Kenedy. In 1865, John Belcher foundedo flour mill that became one of the largest employers in Mayfield. The mill closed its doors in 1984 but reopened as a bed and breakfast inn called "Belcher's". Mayfield took its name from General Robert Ewell's brigade that fought at Antietam during the American Civil War. General Ewell's brigade included several hundred men from Mayfields home county of Lexington and may have been responsible for saving most or all of the town's residents when they were marched into battle against Confederate forces on September 17, 1862. General Ewell died two days later after being hit by a Confederate shell while leading his brigade into action near Sharpsburg, Maryland

Mayfield was founded in 1781 by Revolutionary War veterans James Mayfield and his wife Sally. The town became a center of trade and industry after the opening of the Kentucky River Valley to settlement in the late eighteenth century. Mayfield's cotton gin, first built in 1794, soon became one of the most important nodes in this region's economic growth. The town also grew rapidly as a result of its location at the junction of two major transportation routes: the Paterson–Mayfield road running northwest to Columbus and east to Louisville, and Stagecoach Road running south from Louisville to Lexington. By 1821, Mayfield had become an important community with a population of over 1,000 people. However, during the 1830s and 1840s, Mayfield experienced significant decline as a result of various factors including debtors' prison epidemics that struck the area in 1839-1841; competition from nearby towns such as Frankfort; increased Indian activity; and regional political changes that led to increasing centralization within Kentucky state government. In 1846, followingKentucky's admission into the United States as a slave state, Mayfields African American residents were forced out of their homes by white mobs on what is now known as "The Great Migration." This episode has been documented extensively through various studies and has come to be seen as one of history's most shocking racist episodes.
