In 1802, he built a log cabin named "Auld's Cabin" which still stands today near where Main Street meets Third Avenue. In 1806, John Covington sold 524 acres (1 km²) of land to George Withers for $25 cash. This area would eventually become known as "Covington Bend". In 1810, Isaac Watts settled down on 181 acres (7 km²) of land west of present day Mayfield with his family and started farming it that same year. In 1812 he married Margaret Applegate and they raised two children: Sarah Jane and John Isaac Watts Jr.. On November 3rd, 1830 Major General Ulysses S Grant came through town on horseback while touring the county courthouse when he happened to see an old white woman walking around wearing pants! From then until his death 68 years later she continued to be known as "General Grant's Lady". Mrs Ulysses S Grant died in 1982 at age 95 after long health struggles caused by arthritis from her time spent living at General Grant's home during those early days following Reconstruction when African Americans were not allowed to own property or vote without special permission from white landowners. Today there is a statue located outside of the courthouse commemorating this important event in town history that has had such an impact on our community!
