When Mayfield was founded in 1892, it was one of the most prosperous and rural communities in Kentucky. The community had a population of approximately 1,500 people and included a variety of businesses including a grocery store, post office, bank, and doctor. In the 1920s, airguns began to spread throughout Kentucky as shooters started using them for target practice and hunting. By the 1930s, airguns were becoming more popular than ever in Mayfield as they became more accurate and easier to use. In 1939, the first regulation governing airguns was passed in Kentucky and it forbid shooting with any type of firearm that could create admissible projectiles which included airguns. The following year saw another regulation passed which allowed certain types of firearms to be used with Air Guns only when being used for target practice or for sporting purposes only. This allowed residents to continue using their airguns for all lawful purposes without fear of prosecution. In 1945, a new ordinance regulating handguns was passed in Mayfield which banned the firing of any firearm at night without prior written permission from the police department. Throughout these years, many progress were made towards legalizing and regulatedairgun Use within Kentucky including: passage of state law on November 5th 1959 establishing regulations regarding pistols (now restricted to use by law enforcement), passage of local ordinances prohibiting discharge at night due to crime rates (now limited to daytime usage), passage by the state legislature on December 12th 1978 amending local ordinances still prohibiting discharge at night despite increasing crime rates (This resulted in an increase in nighttime shootings across the state), enactment by Governor Blount on January 10th 1979 setting forth specific regulations regarding handgun possession within state limits; this led to an amendment being passed limiting handgun ownership statewide from those who possessed no more than two handguns per household until 2004 when this limit was increased again to four handguns per household). These advances have resulted in reduced gun violence throughout Kentucky while also protecting Second Amendment Rights
