In 1861, the outbreak of the American Civil War led to a firearms boom in Kentucky. This was due to the new and improved rifles being made in greater numbers and for sale to soldiers. Military-style carbines were especially popular among men, as they were easier and faster to shoot than handguns. The demand for these firearms caused manufacturers to create flashlights as a means of sighting in their guns. One such manufacturer was David Sikes Manufacturing Company, which created the first flashlight designed specifically for use with military rifles. This product, called the Sikes Rifle Flashlight, was patented on October 15, 1874. Madisonville is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Madisonville was Samuel Jones in 1810. He and his family were among the first to come to what is now Jefferson County from east Tennessee. James Bowie opened a store there in 1811 and named it after himself, Madisonville being one of his initial acreage purchases. Madisonville experienced its peak commercial development during the 1870s when two large sawmills operated by J.H. Bowles and Brothers produced lumber for local businesses and shipped directly to Louisville on canals across the river. A textile mill built near downtown began production in the 1920s but declined in popularity due to competition from mills closer to Louisville; it closed down in 1984. In recent years, Madisonville has seen some redevelopment with new homes being built on former cotton land northeast of downtown as well as an attempt by developers to revive the property along Main Street which has been vacant for several years now due to lack of interest or money from buyers or renters alike.

Madisonville was a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, until the early 1800s when it became part of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The town developed around a sawmill and gristmill. Madisonville was originally named for General James Wilkinson who fought in the French and Indian War. The mill was built in 1814 by John Denton. In 1827, William Hinton bought the mill from Denton and renamed it the Hinton Mill. In 1829, he added a furnace to the mill which made bricks for use at Louisville's new public works projects. In 1865, James Hite sold the mill to Charles Goodrich who changed its name to Goodrich & Company. Goodrich continued to operate it until 1901 when it went bankrupt and was taken over by J C Pope Coal & Coke Company. In 1906, Pope merged with United States Steel Corporation which made Madisonville an official steel town. Pope also founded Pope University which is now one of America's largest universities.
Madisonville was founded in 1792 by Daniel Boone. It became an important center for the fur trade because of its rich coal and iron deposits. The town was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
