Madisonville is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Pike County and part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The Madisonville community was founded by pioneer settlers on May 5, 1821 when James Covington and his family purchased of land from John Overstreet for $200. They named their new settlement after James Madison, the third President of the United States. The first store opened in 1825 and the first post office was established in 1827. During the 1830s, crop failures led to increased demand for labor in agriculture; as a result, many families moved to Madisonville from surrounding counties during this period. Many businesses were started or continue to operate here such as J H Hackett's grocery store (1830-1875), Fayette Coal & Coke Works (1835-1910), S W Smith's clothing store (c 1840), A G Weiser's bakery (1850-1900), P C White's sawmill (c 1850), A M McDonald's restaurant/barbecue house/grill business (c 1950) and Donnybrook Farms ice cream parlor/flavoring company (1970). In 1958, construction began on what would become West Fork High School which replaced one of several small schools that had been constructed here over time. After years of planning and fundraising by local citizens—led by Mayor Charles Dutton—the opening of West Fork High School took place on September 24th, 1961 with more than 350 students from throughout Pike County attending Classes Day ceremonies held at First Baptist Church across the street from school’s new building. At its peak enrollment during its first decade of operation, West Fork had an additional 350 students plus 30 faculty members who taught both morning classes and evening classes; making it one of only two high schools within 20 miles with full-time staffs located within each grade level classroom setting in Kentucky! In 1972–1973 development began on what would become Riverview Elementary which replaced one of several small elementary schools that had been constructed here over time. Once again collaboration between mayor Dutton and citizens led to groundbreaking taking place on October 8th 1973 followed by open enrollment for kindergartners through eighth graders on November 2nd1974 – making Riverview one of only threeelementary schools within 40 miles with full-time staffs located within each grade level classroom setting! As riverfront grew rapidly into an important center for retailing cultural activities for residents throughout downtown Louisville as well as neighboring communities including Bardstown and Bellevue – Riverview experienced rapid growth becoming an anchor institution status quo not easily disturbed! The first school in town (grades one through eight) opened on May 6, 1907. In 1915 it became an all-girl school; by 1918 girls had re-opened grades nine through twelve. On November 9, 1920, Prohibition led to a local dry spell that lasted for several months; however, by 1922 prohibition had ended and business grew rapidly again On February 4th 1898 musician/singer Fletcher Henderson died from diphtheria at age 26 while performing at the Green Gables Hotel near Lexington with his band The cream puffs

During this time, Madisonville also became known for its annual Fourth of July parade that pride itself on being one of the most colorful events in Kentucky. In 1930, Madisonville lost its status as a city and reverted back toits previous rural character. However, over time it has regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for Louisville.
