He donated land to build a courthouse and Library for Louisville which were completed in 1803. Ketchum also founded the first high school in Jefferson County which opened its doors to students on October 1, 1814. During World War II, Madisonville played a significant role as an airfield for military operations near Louisville by being used as both an airbase and storage area for munitions during World War II. The airfield was closed down after the war but remains evidence of how important Madisonville had become during that time period within Louisville's economy

Madisonville, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, located on the eastern bank of the Ohio River. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Madisonville were Potters from Maryland and Virginia who founded a community on what is now called Green Fork Township in 1792. They built log cabins and raised maize and beans for their own consumption and trade with neighbors across the river in Ohio. By 1813, however, most of the Potters had emigrated to Missouri or other states when land grants were issued to them by President James Ketchum as part of his Indian Removal Act. A few families remained behind to help run the community until it was abandoned around 1840 when new developers arrived and started building new homes on land that they had acquired fromthe Potters. Madisonville's history began with its location where three rivers converged: the Allegheny River, which flows south down into Cincinnati; tributaries such as Green Fork (now known as Donelson) Creek; and Beaverdam Creek which rises north near Georgetown and flows east into Pittsburgh before joining the Allegheny at Forbes Falls just downstream from Madisonville proper. The area that would eventually become Madisonville lay between these three waterways for over two centuries because it was farmlands used by farmers from Pennsylvania along with settlers from Great Britain who came through Westmoreland County during this time period looking for new land to settle after being driven out of North America by Native Americans such as the Shawnee tribe (whose territory included present day Indiana). In 1821, David Wills discovered coal near what is now downtown Madisonville while exploring nearby hills northeast of town via an early version of today's Pipeline Road/Upper Cumberland Pike. This discovery led to one of Louisville's earliest successful mining operations and soon after saw construction begin on what would become one of Kentucky's largest brickyards - still active today thanks largely to periodic fire suppression efforts! In addition to manufacturing bricks for buildings, ovens, fireplace mantels etc., miners also dug canals supplying water long enough for steamboats moored at various points below surface level transportable crops upriver all season long! Coalmining quickly became oneof Louisville’s leading industries making it oneof those cities whose fortunes changed directly due theretoxploded prices associated with copper production due primarilyto technological advances made by American miners- principally Nicholas Rollingstone (1795-1864), John Brown & Co.(1819-1865))and Andrew Carnegie (1835-1920), among others! Mining companies erected more than 20 miles worthof pipeline crossings connecting mines directwith markets throughout central Louisville!
