Madisonville is a small town in eastern Kentucky. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Madisonville is one of the oldest towns in Kentucky and traces its roots to 1792. It became a courthouse town in 1823 and was named for James K. Madison, an early settler in this area who served as justice of the peace and prosecuting attorney. In 1826, Madisonville became capital of what would become known as the Bourbon County district. The first school inMadisonville opened on October 5th, 1836 by Aiken Randolph & Co., proprietors of that time one of the leading Factoriesto Louisville& Nashville Railroad Development Company Limited (later Louisville & Nashville Railway). Classes were held at home until 1840 when a new school building was erected on Market Street near present day US 52nd Street by Mrs Pugh Marshall & Son; it served until 1865 when it burned down. In 1848 Mr Hanks started Harper’s Ferry Academy which taught Drawing and Painting for Children from 3 years old through college level teaching under Federal government control with no tuition paid by parents or pupils! At present there are over 150 students enrolled from grades PreK thru XII attending Harper’s Ferry Academy located just east off I-75 just south of downtown Lexington! In 1861 Union General Ambrose Burnside ordered all citizens must turn over arms or be interned within 10 days starting February 12th 1861 while residents complied only after providing $100 worth of goods per family plus $50 towards any war bonds they may have had! This led to open warfare between Unionists and Confederates beginning February 14th 1861 with skirmishes occurring daily around town before finally becomingbattlefield when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded centralKentucky on April 6th 1861!!! After three months artillery bombardment his army advanced slowly through rural areas striking major industrial centers such as Manchester(now Paducah), Hopkinsvilleand Bowling Green before encountering heavy resistance driving them back across upper Cumberland River near Lebanon Tennessee where he abandoned his armyJanuary 15TH 1862!!! Union forces burned down muchof downtown Lexington including Mrs Pugh Marshall’s school buildingFebruary 8TH 1862 during their retreat from Lexington following three weeks long battle giving rise to present day downtown Lexington name “Hurtown” derived from this event! For more than 50 years Hurtown has been known as “The Place Where Lost Causes Were Fought And Won”!! From 1863 thru 1865 many large businesses such as United States Steel Corporation were located in what is now downtown Lexington including Bankers Trust Company which still stands today! Post offices continued functioning until 1865 but all mail went via train to Louisville then boats back home!! Madisonville is a town in Morgan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,833 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in Madisonville was founded by James Caldwell and his family on the present site of the town on November 12, 1812. For many years it was one of the most important stops along the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. A post office was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first schoolhouse in Madisonville was built about 1834 by Alexander Ritchie. It continued to be used as a school until 1870 when a new school building became available. In that year, the town purchased land from J.C Caldwell for development into an incorporated village with a common election precinct, business district and public library. In 1912-13, work began on creating a street plan for Madisonville which would eventually become State Route 66. Madisonville has been home to several famous people including General George Armstrong Custer and author William Golding who lived there during his boyhood days until he moved to Nebraska City near Omaha while still young enough to remember what happened at Little Bighorn during the American Civil War
Madisonville was founded in 1801 by Captain John Wilkinson. The town became a county seat in 1821, and the current courthouse was built in 1886. In 1861, Confederate General George B. McClellan vied for the governorship of Kentucky with general James Longstreet and lost to him. In 1865, Madisonville became the capital of newly created West Virginia.
