Madisonville is a small town in Eastern Kentucky, United States. It is the county seat of Taylor County. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Madisonville were white men who migrated from nearby Louisville in 1812. They began farming and raising livestock, which led to their development as a agricultural community. In 1820, James McKay founded the McKay Manufacturing Company in Madisonville, which became one of the leading firearms manufacturers in Kentucky. The company continued to produce firearms until it merged with Colt Industries in 1958. During World War II, Madisonville played an important role in the Battle of Normandy as part of Operation Market Garden. In 1944-1945, it also served as headquarters for Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force during the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy. In addition to its military significance, Madisonville has also been home to several notable businesses and citizens over the years: McGhee Tyson Inc., WGBC-TV ( Channel 5), Brentwood Furniture Mart (later known as Home Depot), and Donelson's Department Store (now Macy's). In recent decades, there have been efforts underway to revive downtown Madisonville and make it more pedestrian-friendly; however, no substantive progress has been made since 2007 when plans were filed for a $10 million dollar redevelopment project that ultimately failed due to opposition from locals over $(his restrictive zoning).
