Madisonville is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Madisonville Plantation and the home of John C. Calhoun during his time as President of the United States. The town was founded in 1827 by Colonel James Witherspoon and his wife Anna Barton. It prospered from its location on a bend in the Ohio River and from being part of Campbell County. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell passed through Madisonville on his way to battle at Stones River; he stopped for dinner at Barton's home and stayed there until after midnight before continuing on his march northeastward. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant passed through Madisonville while leading an army north to join forces with Sherman in Atlanta; he also stopped for dinner at Barton's house that night before continuing onward. In 1868, Governor Ramsey offered land to James Witherspoon in exchange for giving up Madisonville; Witherspoon took possession and began developing it into a successful agricultural community named after him (Witherspoonown). In 1925, when Johnston made Louisville his new capital following his elevation to the presidency, he chose Madisonville as one of several towns within Johnson County that would be annexed into the city limits; it remained an annexe until 1959. The first post office was established in 1827 by Colonel James Witherspoon with name "Newburgh." A new post office was established at what is now known as downtown Madisonville on March 7, 1830 by Major John Smith under act of Congress approved April 5th; this post office continued open until February 9th 1840 when it became "Cleveland". On October 2nd 1860 the name change from "Newburgh" to "Madisonville". On November 3rd 1870 store owner Elijah Herring erected know courthouse which remains standing today corner of Main & State Streets inside free fire zone still operated today by Historical Society Incorporated which operates museum adjacent building currently used as Walmart across street
Madisonville was a small town in central Kentucky, United States, until the late 19th century. The original settlers were members of the Anglican Church and their first store was built on Main Street in 1811. A post office was established at Madisonville in 1816, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. The community developed around a small school and church which were located on the east side of the town. The first general store opened within two years of its establishment, and by 1830 there were six stores operating in Madisonville. By 1850 there were twelve stores operating in Madisonville, with a population of about 350. In 1857–1858 a sawmill was put into operation at Madisonville, which provided employment for many residents during the early part of the 20th century. In 1917 an Air Force Base called Love Field was founded near Madisonville, providing support to American forces during World War I. The base operated until 1991 when it closed down due tobudget cuts. After the war ended, many jobs moved away from Madisonville as production geared towards larger cities such as Louisville or Nashville. However, some businesses remain popular today including: KFC (now Papa John's Pizza), Walgreens Pharmacy & More (a large grocery chain), and Applebees restaurant inside former General Motors plant on East Main Street ().
