Madisonville is a small town in Jackson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Madisonville was David Leslie and his wife Martha (née McNaught). They arrived in 1792 from Pennsylvania. David's brother-in-law John Patton came to Madisonville about 1800 with his family. The Patton house still stands on High Street near the current courthouse. In 1801, James Ladd secured a grant of land for $100 from the Kentucky General Assembly. He built a cabin on what is now Market Square and named it "Ladd's Grove." In 1802, he married Rebecca White and moved to Madisonville. They had five children: three boys and two girls. In 1803, John Cofer bought land north of Ladd's Grove for $200 from James Ladd's widow Rebecca White Cofer. He renamed it "Cofer's Grove". At this time, Madisonville consisted only of a few log houses built by farmers around market square. On July 10, 1806, Jno Henson married Rachelle Scott at Cofer's Grove by proxy because she could not attend her betrothal at Lebanon Church due to health reasons; Rachelle was born in Scotland but resided in Louisville when she marriage Henson in 1805 there also under protest of her parents who claimed their daughter should have been returned home to them instead of marrying an American! A party including some among Mr & Mrs Henson’s friends set outJuly 10th @ 3 PM they did not return back until late evening after nightfall when they saw smoke rising over Lexington so they camped out that night then early morning started hiking up hill they got lost very early next morning found themselves right outside Lexington whereupon families discovered them! On arrival home & being questioned stated that she had no idea where they were& thought maybe one Of her friends might know something about where they went which later turned out to be true as her father learned about their venture soon afterwards

The area now known as Madisonville was first settled by the Shawnees in the late 18th century. The town was established on the upper reaches of the Ohio River, about mile south of present-day Cincinnati. In 1799, General George Rogers Clark founded a military post here and named it for his friend and colleague, James K. Polk. Madisonville grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location on an important trade route between Cincinnati and Louisville. By 1810, the town had a population of 2,500 people and had built a few miles of road from downtown to serve as a commercial center. In 1812, General John Covington's army attacked and destroyed Indian villages near Madisonville in what is now Butler County. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the American Civil War. Aftermath of this battle led to increased trade through Madisonville and other nearby settlements that helped contribute significantly to Kentucky's economy during that conflict. During the 1830s, development continued at a rapid pace in Madisonville thanks to new transportation methods such as railroads and riverboats. In 1840, construction began on what would become one of Cincinnati's most famous landmarks—the first public square in America—in what is now Over-the-Rhine Park. This project required more than 6 months of hard work by local builders and entrepreneurs who came together to create an impressive structure that still stands today!
