Madisonville is located in Clay County, Kentucky. It was founded in 1827 by James Caldwell and his family. The first post office was established in 1829. The Caldwells continue to live in the town today. In 1846, two brothers, John and Jesse Caldwell, started the first general store in Madisonville. In 1861, Confederate General Joseph Wheeler's army invaded Clay County and burned all of the stores except for one owned by the Caldwell brothers. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Jacksonport on the Cumberland River and drove all of the Confederates out of Clay County. This event marks the end of Reconstruction in Kentucky and begins what is known as "The Great American Civil War". After the war ended, many people returned to their old life in Clay County. However, a few families kept farms until after World War II when they began to sell land to new residents who would move into these homes with their firearms still parked inside them! Today, Madisonville is an active center for gun culture with many shops and restaurants offering weapons sales or firearm rentals alike. Madisonville was founded in 1817 by James K. Polk and other signers of the Declaration of Independence. The community was named after General John Madison, who fought in the American Revolution and served as president from 1792 to 1801. The first settlers in what is now Madisonville were farmers and their families who arrived around 1800. By 1817, the town had been organized and it became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Lexington and Louisville because it had a store, school, post office, Baptist Church (founded in 1816), Episcopal Church (established in 1818), and two hotels-the first opened in 1819 and still standing today. From its beginnings as a small village until 1840 when Louisville began expanding rapidly into Johnson County, Madisonville saw few changes other than name changes or increasing numbers of residents moving to larger communities within Johnson County or away altogether. In 1840, vote totals showed that there were over 1,000 people living only in Madisonville while less than 50 people lived anywhere else within Johnson County; by 1860 just 10% of all residents lived within Johnson County while more than 95% resided outside it; by 1870 only 5% of residents lived inside Johnson County while nearly 90% resided outside it; by 1980 just 2% of residents lived inside Johnson County while 98% resided outside it; but by 2010 all but 3 out of 4 active businesses downtown were located within one mile of each other-a trend which has continued even as Louisville’s population exploded outward since then). Migration to new areas during this time period helped contribute to some existing residential neighborhoods based on industry such as chemical works which developed along East Main Street near present day US 421 – early blast furnaces produced great quantities of heat which caused problems with fire protection for these workplaces ; textile mills built along Livingston Avenue soon followed – these operations used much more water than earlier industries so rivers became an increasingly important resource for transporting goods across ruralJohnsonCounty Today most people identify themselves primarily with those activities taking place inside one mile radius Downtown including retail trade (Restaurants/ bars & nightclubs ), professional services (Lawyers/ accountants/ law firms ), health care (paediatrician/ orthopedist etc.), real estate (condominiums/apartments) or agriculture related activities such as horticulture or crop production
