Madisonville is a small town in Kentucky, located in the Shelby County School District. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous town in Shelby County and one of its three municipalities. Madisonville is named for General James Wilkinson, who fought against Native Americans during the American Revolution. The community was founded in 1875 by miners who had come to Kentucky from western Pennsylvania to strike it rich mining coal seams on the banks of the Ohio River. The original settlers were farmers and their families who left Pittsburgh to find new land when railroads came through central Appalachia. They arrived at what is now Madisonville on April 12, 1875, just before nightfall after traveling overland from Pike's Peak Station on stagecoach service provided by pioneer David Rittenhouse. The first store opened in this unincorporated settlement on November 10, 1875. At that time there were only about 25 people living hereabouts including six children of pioneers John Sitton and his wife Martha (Smit) Kilpatrick Sitton; John Laughlin; father-in-law Abraham French and mother-in-law Anna English (Strickland). The first school was built soon afterwards with a sod roofed building which served as a gymnasium until 1903 when an addition was made to house a classroom and other facilities. When Clay County became part of Shelby County in 1907, Madisonville became an incorporated municipality with its own government under Mayor Wm Henson In 1912 an old sawmill known as Appleton Mill was acquired by the township for use as a public library which still uses it today In 1916villa Vale School was built adjacent to Holmes Chapel Baptist Church which remains active today From 1927 until 1961 there were two post office buildings - one at 4 Main Street and one at 5th Avenue South - both destroyed by fire In 1951 Mrs J F Hardesty donated land for a high school also known as Villa Vale High School but no students ever graduated from it After many years of discussion between citizens and representatives from nearby townships, it was decided that consolidation such that all schools within a certain municipality could be housed within same facility would result in better educational opportunities for all citizens without having to leave their homes . A committee consisting of Mayor Wm Henson (chairman), Mr J F Hardesty (vice chairman), Mrs Jane Flanders (secretary), Dr J A Metcalfe (treasurer) met on October 25th 1959to discuss this matter with additional members from surrounding municipalities attending represented by Mr Edwin Pugh representing Virginia Township

Madisonville was founded in 1821 by James and Nancy Madison. The first settler in the area, John Marshall, arrived in 1824. The town grew quickly, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, the Madison family donated land to form the current city of Madisonville.
