In 1820, a group of farmers in Madisonville, Kentucky began to experiment with firearms. They decided to tryemption pistols and shotguns. The rifles were made from hickory trees that had been planed smooth so they would notrouse the animals that might be living around the farmstead. In 1826, the first gun was made in Madisonville by John Stephenson.
Madisonville is a small town in central Kentucky, located about forty-five miles east of Louisville. The population was 3,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Urban Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Woodruff and his wife Rachel. A post office was established there in 1815. The name of the town honor General James Madison, an important figure in the American Revolution and one of the signers of the United States Constitution. The town began to grow rapidly after white settlers arrived in what is now Madisonville from nearby Bardstown in 1838. By 1840, there were more than 100 residents living here; by 1850, that number had swollen to over 1,000 people. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers retreating from Gettysburg destroyed many buildings and killed several people near Madisonville Junction railway station, local citizens rallied to support their southern brethren and help rebuild the town as quickly as possible. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the Civil War, Madisonville became a center for black political activity in central Kentucky. Many blacks who had fled violence or poverty in South Carolina or Georgia came to live here during this time period before moving on to new opportunities elsewhere within Kentucky or Tennessee after Reconstruction ended. During World War II, Madisonville played a significant role as an important munitions production center for eastern Kentucky due to its location close to plants operated by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and other manufacturers wartime production needs such as tanks and planes; however most manufacturing ceased during postwar times becauseancounter-production costs became prohibitively high relative to European rivals such as Germany and Japan

Madisonville, Kentucky was founded in 1785 by Hugh Mercer and his family. The town grew rapidly and by 1825 it had a population of over 3,000. In 1865, the Union army invaded Kentucky and burned most of Madisonville. Today only a few remaining buildings from the early days of the town remain. The biggest attraction in Madisonville is its namesake river, the James River. Although there are no bridges spanning the river, visitors can walk or bike along its banks for a luxurious view of Louisville and downtown Cincinnati below.
British Settlers in Madisonville, Kentucky The first known British settlers in what is now Madisonville were the Wills brothers, who arrived in 1786. The Willows were a group of men from Wiltshire, England who settled on the banks of the Ohio River. They built a cabin and named their new land Madison County after JamesMadison, the first president of the United States. The Wills family remained in business until 1824. Some other early settlers inMadisonville included John Cook (1784-1854), Nicholas Weems (1787-1860), and his father Robert Weems (1789-1856). These men worked as farmers and traders around the area before moving to Kentucky permanently. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson signed an executive order expanding U.S. territory eastward to include present day Kentucky. This led to many refugees coming to America seeking refuge or opportunity. By 1815, there were over 20 families living in Madisonville with about 100 head of cattle and 10 horses under cultivation. During this time period, many Scots-Irish immigrants also came overland from Ireland looking for a better life. They started businesses such as tanneries and grocery stores near Lexington because they did not have enough space for their farms back home. In addition, some Americanized Scottish Catholics also moved into what is now Madisonville during this time period; these people became known as "Madisons." As America grew increasingly industrialized during the 19th century, more people began moving to Kentucky due to its booming economy and easy access to farmland. By 1830, there were more than 1,000 residents living in Madisonville with a population growth rate of 25%. By 1840, most of the British settlers had died or emigrated while those still remaining had all but disappeared by that point due to economic problems within their own community caused by factors such as Indian Wars and political instability abroad which led to increased demand for land throughout America's burgeoning frontier era
