In 1824, two men by the name of John Smeaton and James Brown patented a design for a binocular. The first pair of binoculars were made in 1825 and they were known as the "Brown Brothers." The Brown Brothers are credited with being the first to sell binoculars to the general public. In 1830, both brothers died in an accident while making their third batch of binoculars. Their patents expired in 1836, but their invention lives on through their legacy and company that still makes quality products today.

Madisonville is a small town in Scott County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,406 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. Madisonville is named after General James Hogg, who fought in the American Revolution and was born in nearby Morehead City. The first settler in Madisonville was John Smith, who arrived in 1775. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. The next year, he married Elizabeth Knapp and they moved to what is now Scott County. John and Elizabeth had two children: James (Jimmie) and Maryann (Mamie). In 1800, Anna May Stratton purchased some land from John Smith for $8 per acre ($40 per square mile). Stratton became known as the "Mother of Madisonville." She erected a large Federalist-style house on her property which served as home until 1814 when she sold it to Colonel Elijah Farnsworth for $100 (). Colonel Farnsworth used the house as his headquarters during the Creek War (1812–1813). In 1815, Colonel Farnsworth sold his property to Isaac Hodges for $200 (). Isaac Hodges operated a gristmill here until 1819 when he donated it to local schools (). After Hodges' death, it passed through several hands before being acquired by George Aiken in 1861 (). Aiken operated an ice cream parlor here until 1917 when he built a private residence on the site. Aiken's family lived here until their deaths in 1925 and 1927 respectively. In 1941, additional land was added to form what is now Market Street () around what once were Aiken's residences. In 1969–1970, Market Street was widened and resurfaced with asphalt so that it could be indistinguishable from Main Street (), making Madisonville one of only two U.S.-born towns located within an urban core without having its own street name ();the other being Providence RI *. 1st cousin twice removed William Jumper bought section 2-4 & 6-8 lot on corner of Main & Market Streets from Mrs Cloyd Ewing on Nov 25 1924 - Dec 1923

The town was named for Colonel John Madison, who had served in the American Revolution and died at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The company built a courthouse, a school, and other small businesses. In 1811, the company sold its holdings to the United States government. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming one of Kentucky's most important cities. During World War I, Madisonville played an important role as a munitions plant. After the war, it became an agricultural center and began to experience rapid growth again during the 20th century. In recent years, Madisonville has become known for its arts scene and its position as a center for education and research.
