He named it for General John Forbes, Countess of Dunmore's Colony (later Virginia). In 1801, when President James K. Polk sent Major General Andrew Jackson to invade Tennessee and drive out the Cherokee people, Robertson joined forces with Jackson and drove the Cherokees out of their lands near present-day Louisville. The first post office at Lyndon opened in 1827; it closed in 1865 because of mail delivery problems caused by Indian hostilities. The first school was organized in 1828 and operated until 1889; it became a library in 1912. In 1850, Robert Ewing bought 1,000 acres (500 ha) along periodontal springs north of present-day Lyndon for $10 per acre ($ millionToday). He started to develop this land into a plantation called "Ewing's Racetrack". The race track first opened as a simulcast facility between Louisville and Nashville on October 3, 1897; it became an all-ianty track on May 7th 1902 with races up to $5 million each year. It built an extensive racing complex which includes both grade I and II courses while also providing horseracing amenities including grandstands and other showroom features typical of large racetracks at that time such as those found at New York's Yankee Stadium or London's Hyde Park Corner Racecourse
Lunenburg County was organized in 1853, and named for General David Lunenburg. The first courthouse was built in 1865. In 1876, the county seat was moved to Lyndon.
