In 1980, two gunmen opened fire on a group of innocent bystanders at an auto dealership in Lyndon after getting out of their car to make some purchases. This resulted in three fatalities; both shooters were apprehended within hours following the shootings and were eventually tried for capital murder charges which were dropped due to lack evidence.

LBJ attended high school in Lexington before attending Harvard University where he graduated with a degree in history in 1939. He served in World War II as an American tank commander and then served as a United States Senator from Texas from 1941 to 1945. In 1948, he became the Vice President of the United States under Harry Truman and won re-election against Adlai Stevenson by about 1 million votes. On January 20, 1961, LBJ became the first U.S. president to be impeached for obstruction of justice after being found guilty on four counts of perjury by the House of Representatives but was acquitted by the Senate (the first U.S. president to be so impeached). After leaving office, he lived out his life at retreats near Malibu Beach California until his death on October 25, 1972 at age 80 years old
