Lyndon, Kentucky is home to the world’s second-oldest continuously inhabited shooting school, and it is also where the first effective means of preventing gunfire was developed. The old stone buildings that stand today on the town square were built in 1835 by Colonel James Wilkinson as a training ground for militia forces. The area around what is now Lyndon was originally part of East Tennessee, which bordered Kentucky on the south and west. A patent for a gunsmithing invention was filed in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, and it seems that early residents of Lyndon may have been familiar with this tool. By 1812, there were references to “a place called Lyndone [Lincoln County], about four miles from here … containing an excellent shotgun range” (Powell). It would be another seventy years before any effective means of stopping gunfire became available in Lyndon. In 1868, General Andrew Johnson ordered the construction of a military arsenal at Lyndon in order to arm local militias against Native Americans. The site chosen for the arsenal consisted of an old millrace known as Red River Run which had been used by farmers for transportation purposes since pre-historic times. The millrace formed an ideal spot because it provided cover from Indian rifle fire while providing access to water resources necessary for cannonnery practice. Unfortunately, when work began on the arsenal, rice fields intervened between the millrace and the river bed which made ranged shooting difficult; furthermore, ammunition could not be stockpiled near water supplies due to their high humidity levels! Despite these difficulties, construction continued until 1871 when Johnson signed legislation ordering its destruction (Fowler). In its final form, this legislation required all firearms manufacturers in America to produce guns without stocks or barrels that could be easily converted into rifled cartridges; rifles must also have sights capable of ranging from 100 yards out to 3 miles! This measure came as a great relief to gunsmiths who had difficulty meeting these new manufacturing standards – now they could produce weapons that met government specifications without having their products destroyed! Today we see many descendants of those who worked on building Johnson’s Arsenal living in Lyndon; some still use their skills today with arms manufacture companies throughout America. In office Johnson worked vigorously to reduce taxes and increase government spending while also seeking passage of legislation that helped expand civil rights and women’s rights. During his time as President he also made significant contributions to American diplomacy including leading America into World War II and developing nuclear weapons policy. After his death in 1969, Johnson is considered one of America’s most successful Presidents with an eight year term as Commander-in-Chief totals
