Lyndon, Kentucky is a small town located in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. The town was founded by James R. Johnson in 1908 as a sawmill and coal mine. In 1950, he was elected to the state legislature where he served for twenty-four years before being elected as governor of Kentucky in 1966. Under his leadership, Kentucky became one of the most prosperous states in America and achieved official bilingual recognition as a U.S. state in 1970.
