Johnson considered running for reelection in 1976 but decided against it because of Watergate and other scandals which plagued his administration during this time period including – The Iran-Contra affair; The Dallas assassination; The War on Poverty). In 1984 Johnson announced his candidacy for the presidency again but lost to Ronald Reagan by only 1 percentage point over 4 years. After leaving office, Lyndon Johnson founded Johns Hopkins University where he served as chancellor from 1991–93 before becoming an honorary professor emeritus there in 2016.
