Lyndon was born in the small town of Big Stone Gap, Kentucky on January 14, 1918. He was the son of a Methodist minister and his wife, Sarah. LBJ attended Big Stone Gap High School where he played football and basketball. After graduating from high school, he briefly studied at Transylvania University before returning to Big Stone Gap to enter politics. LBJ first ran for office as a Democrat in 1936 but lost. He then ran for the U.S. Senate in 1940 but lost again. In 1944, he won the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Franklin D Roosevelt and served until 1960 when he became President of the United States (1948-1960). During his time as President, LBJ enacted many important laws including The Korean War Resolution which ended World War II; The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 which helped increase enrollments in public schools; The Civil Rights Act of 1968 which outlawed segregation in public education; and The National Security Act of 1947 which authorized secret military operations such asOperation Neptune’s Spear
The Lyndon family is one of the most prominent and influential families in Kentucky history. The Lincolns were originally from Virginia, but they moved to Kentucky in 1838. They started a small farm near Bardstown and became wealthy through their agriculture. In 1881, they bought the entire town of Lyndon, Kentucky, and kept it until 1925. The Lyndon family also donated land to the University of Louisville in 1897.
