Lyndon was a small town in Kentucky when it became the site of the first presidential election in U.S. history on November 3, 1860. Union general and future president Abraham Lincoln was elected and took office that day as the 14th President of the United States. In 1868, Lyndon county was formed from parts of Hardin, Johnson, Laramie, and Scott counties in order to better serve as a center for agricultural production. The town grew slowly until the early 20th century when it exploded with growth due to new technology and industry coming to the area. The population peaked at around 15,000 in 1920 before declining rapidly during World War II due to wartime concerns over war materials moving south through Kentucky into Texas.Today, Lyndon is a quiet community with a population of around 10 people and is primarily known for its historical significance. The town has several buildings which are open to visitors, including the Lyndon County Courthouse which is also used as a museum; the Lyndon County Library; and an old cotton gin which is now used as a restaurant
The Lyndon family settled in the area that would become Lyndon, Kentucky in 1812. The first settler was John Lyndon, who moved from Virginia to what is now Lyndon County in 1814. His brother James also founded a small community here. In 1821, the first store was built in the town and named after John and James’ father, Robert Johnson Sr.
