Lyndon was founded in 1817 by a group of men who left the town of Logansport, Indiana to come to Kentucky. The area that is now Lyndon was then part of what is now Randolph County. The men named their new settlement after President James K. Polk, who had been elected in 1844 and had helped open up the western United States to settlement. Lincoln Assassination: A Timeline In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot while walking in Springfield, Illinois. Maryland’s John Wilkes Booth then assassinated Lincoln with a six-shot cartridge from his rifle inside Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., leaving Lincoln dead and Booth wounded. On November 14th, 1865, four days after Lincoln’s assassination, Union General George Armstrong Custer led an attack on Confederate General Robert Ewell at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Virginia. After two days of fighting and heavy casualties on both sides, Custer ordered his forces to retreat across the Potomac River into Maryland Territory where he could regroup and purpose another assault against Richmond. On January 3rd, 1870 – almost one hundred years after Lyndon was founded – the last shots were fired in Lexington during the American Civil War when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Fort Sumter within range of Union artillery batteries stationed around Lexington Common just outside the city limits
