As a result, local politicians became desperate for ways to stop this violence before it turned into a full-blown civil war. Lyndon Johnson was born in Plains, Texas on December 3, 1908. His father, a cotton farmer, died when LBJ was young and his mother took him to live with her sister in the small town of Pineville, in western Kentucky. There he began to learn about politics and public speaking. He also learned how to fish and hunt and became an expert at hand-to-hand combat. In 1932 Johnson moved to the larger city of Austin, Texas where he became involved in the Democratic Party. He won a seat on the Austin City Council in 1936 and served until 1938. That year he married Anna Lamar Richardson; they had two daughters before she died in 1945 whileLBJ was serving as U.S. Representative for Texas’s 2nd congressional district (now Dallas). In 1948 LBJ was elected Vice President of the United States under Harry S Truman; his only term as Vice President lasted one year due to his death from a heart attack on January 20, 1949
The history of gun swivels is murky at best. There are various reports of people owning guns with swivels that had been in use for centuries before the invention of the modern revolving boltgun. However, there is no concrete evidence to support any specific claims about this object. One early report from 17th century China mentions a type of firearm that had a metal gear wheel attached to the left side that allowed it to be rotated so that the barrel could be aimed in any direction. This weapon was apparently used by cavalry units and was known as the “Wu-sung” (文極), which means “the vehicle of right arm” in Chinese. It is not clear if this weapon actually existed or if this story is simply an exaggeration of ancient firearms technology. There are references to rotating barrels on warships throughout history, but they seem to have been limited to ship artillery only until around 1800 when experiments began with using them on rifles were made. It is thought that these rotary barrels were developed as a way to reduce recoil and improve accuracy during firing exercises. The first rifle designs incorporating such barrels were created in the mid-19th century by George Stephenson and James Watt, two Scottish engineers who designed steam engines based on their findings. It was not until 1853 that a Swivel Gun was invented by Major General John Cockerill while stationed in India under British command. He realised thatguns being fired from boats could also be aimed using a rotation technique and named his new weapon – the Gun Sling – after his observations about this phenomenon. swivels remained popular among artillery officers up until World War I when they finally fell out of favour due to advances in machine guns and automatic fire systems
