Lyndon is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The Lyndon community began as a farming village on the side of a mountain in 1875. A post office was established there in 1876, and by 1880 it had reached its present size. The community grew rapidly due to the timber industry, and by 1914 it had 471 residents. By 1930, however, the logging industry had declined and the population had dwindled to just 171 people. In 2000, however, Lyndon regained its status as an independent town with a population of 710 people. Lyndon was named for Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President and Secretary of State (1865-1868). Grant visited Lyndon several times during his term as President and met with many local farmers and businessmen there before leaving for Washington D.C., where he served as general manager of Railroads Department under Lincoln during the American Civil War
Lyndon was founded in 1819 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife, Nancy. The town rapidly grew in population and importance as a center of agricultural production and local politics. In 1851, the United States Congress passed the Land Act of 1851, which gave land to settlers in Kentucky. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops outside of Lyndon, resulting in the death of several soldiers and civilians. The town quickly recovered and became a major center for trade and industry. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended slavery in all but three states in America. As a result of this event, Lyndon became one of the most important cities in Kentucky.
