The history of gun chokes can be traced back to at least the early 1800s. The firstGun Choke was patented in 1822 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French firearms engineer. This device consisted of a metal bar with an viciously sharp end that could be inserted into the barrel of a firearm and held there by a strap. The aim of using this choke was to slow down or stop the action of the rifle, making it more difficult for enemies to fire accurate shots. In 1903, John Moses Browning designed and patented the Browning Rifle chokes. These devices consisted of two parts: an inner recoil spring that would return the bolt to its firing position after being retarded by the choke; and an outer plunger that would retain rounds in place once they were released from the choke. This new invention allowed shooters to shoot faster and with greater accuracy than ever before, thanks to its simplicity and efficiency. From here, gun chokes quickly evolved into their current form. In 1966, Bob Chaney filed a patent for what is now known as “gun-choke Peacemaker” which consists of four small brass balls that fit into slots on either side of the muzzle brake on most handguns. By means of these balls, it is possible for users to adjust or tighten up their choke until it becomes almost perfect for their particular firearm. Today, gun chokes are still used today in order to improve shooting performance and accuracy!
