Lyndon was originally founded in 1801 by the James family. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of coal mines in the area and it soon became one of the most important settlements in Kentucky. In 1820, Lyndon merged with neighboring Georgetown to form a town charter that still exists today. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century and attained its peak population size in 1907. However, social unrest quickly followed and Lyndon eventually fell out of favor with many residents due to its pro-slavery stance. Its population gradually dwindled over the years until it finally ceased operation in 1990.
