Lyndon was founded in 1814 by two brothers, John and James Lyndon. It became a state in 1907. The area now known as Lyndon was first settled by Native Americans and was named after Chiefdom of the Shawnee. In 1814, the land that would become Lyndon was granted to Major General Andrew Jackson for his military campaigns in the Mexican-American War. The initial settlers were soldiers who fought in the war and received land grants from Jackson. After the war, many of these people moved to what is now Jefferson County, Kentucky, where they started small businesses and raised crops. In 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order providing federal assistance to farmers in Kentucky who had been hard hit by a drought. This led to increased business activity at local farms, which allowed new people to move into the area and start their own families.
