It wasn't until February 14th 1820 that General James Houstons 7th Infantry Regiment laid siege to Fort Donnelson from an positions on Castelo de la Garza Creek just west ofpresent day Downtown Louisville along forces led by Colonel Isaac Shelby where over 100 native Americans were killed before finally withdrawing without taking any prisoners or supplies leaving behind 400 horses, cannons and equipment that became known as Houstons' Horse blankets or "Housts". During this time period there were many fires throughout downtown due to lack of control by firefighters over space limitations caused by Fort Donnelson's original location between parts of fortifications overlooking both river valleys creating strategic advantages for Native Americans living within easy rifle range while also providing cover forFort Donnelson's defenders against repeated attacks
