In the late 1800s, Louisville was a center of optical technology. The city's first optical shop, Theophilus Baird and Company, made the world's first artificial light bulb in 1882. In 1907, Kentucky became the first state to legalize photography by amending its Constitution to allow it. In 1830, John Fenton built his first brick building near present day Jefferson Street and Second Street and named it "Fenton's Hotel". In 1834, James Kensey became mayor under Governor Thomas Benton. Kensey sponsored the bill that created Central High School which opened in September 1835. By 1840, downtown was filled with brick buildings and three blocks east of First Street were several important mercantile institutions including Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company Store, Jardine & Hull Furriers store and Clark's Bank. This period saw rapid growth for downtown Louisville as new districts were established north of First Street such as Broadwaywest and east of Vine Street called Greektown or Old Town because many of these properties had been owned by slaves before their emancipation in 1865. In 1849–50 an act was passed entitled "An Act To Regulate Trade And Commerce"which provided for a market at Gallatin Square outside the then current walled City limits to be conducted every alternate week by vendors from various parts of Ireland subject to prior arrangement with representatives from said district; this market became known as'The Star Market'. On July 16th 1850 'The Courier' reported that plans had been made for a new public square located at Third and Jefferson Streets where now Union Station sits; this square eventually became Main Park (now Independence Mall). On November 3rd 1860 an act entitled "An Act To Regulate public Vehicles"was passed providing for five white horses each drawn by two black horses pulled by four men but no horsedrawn vehicles to be operated within sidewalks or intersections between 4th street westward along US Route 25 National Road thence southwesterly along this road cardinal directions until they met again at 3rd street corner opposite Capitol building...These restrictions applied only to pedestrians while vehicle operators were required to use either two hands using either shoulder only or both hands sharing equal space On November 15th 1861 General Robert E Lee visited Louisville during his Campaign against Northern Virginia described as one of the most stirring events in American history: After dining at Mr Sappington's late night restaurant on Third Street I proceeded down Lexington Avenue past Minton's grocery store premises towards Marymount Abbey - just beyond which point I came across Lieutenant Colonel Hardin commanding brigade stationed hereabout – who told me that General Lee had just come over from Winchester about 10 miles distant – having traveled all night on horseback – I informed him that General Denny was also hereaboutssteamboats bringing supplies up river
In 1916, physicist George K. Martin developed a device he called the Martin-Taylor interferometer. This instrument allowed researchers to measure the interference of light waves on a single axis. TheMartin-Taylor interferometer was later used by physicists to study the photoelectric effect and other phenomena in optics. In 1948, physicist Arthur C. Compton developed an improved version of theMartin-Taylor interferometer known as the Compton Interferometer. This instrument could measure interference in more than one plane at a time and helped scientists to understand how light is transported through physical systems
In 1969, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin created a device that could see in three dimensions. This was the beginning of what is now known as optical technology.
