Despite these obstacles, General Polk successfully fought against Mexican forces and helped lead America into its first successful war with Spain since independence had been achieved two years earlier. After victory over Mexico and Reconstruction had ended in America, Louisville grew rapidly as businesses geared up to open their doors again after all of this time without military action taking place nearby! Businesses such as banks, hotels, shoe stores and grocery stores sprang up all around downtown while new streetcar lines brought residents closer to business districts like Union Station and High Street Plaza (now Convention Center). In 1924 Mayor John Fenton announced plans for a massive expansion of downtown – dubbed “The Modernization Program” – which would bring jobs and development Downtown including an addition to First National Bank Building on Fourth Street just ahead of Stouffer’s department store on Fifth Street; a new library;[2][3] apartment buildings; a movie theater;[4][5] several blocks of recreational ground called Queen Anne Park (now Prospect Park) bounded by Third Street on the south,[6][7][8][9] FourthStreet between Laurel Avenue Westand Fifth Avenue on the north,[10][11][12] Market Square on the east side adjacent to Madison Square Garden andKY State Capitol building on the west side facing Broadway.[13] The original plan called for 400 acres (160 hectares) along FourthStreet between Second Avenue WESTAND Sixth Avenue NORTHWEST OF THE STATE CAPITOL building lot but only 100 acres were ever built because financing became available only after World War II when market demand revived growth around downtown instead with few developments taking place until recently! The first Europeans to visit Louisville were the French in 1629. The area that is now Louisville was part of Spanish Kentucky until 1715. In 1775, when the British attacked Lexington, General George Washington's army burned much of downtown and most of what is now Louisville. The British left for good in 1776, but the town never really recovered from the destruction. In 1801, James K. Polk became president of the United States and made it a point to visit Louisville on his tour of America. He ordered Congress to appropriate $1 million for infrastructure projects in the city, which led to increased development in downtown and other areas around the city center. In 1836, a new courthouse was built at Eighth and Market Streets near what is now "the Bowling Green". In 1861, during American Civil War, Union forces captured Louisville from Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. For many years after this event, Louisville remained an important military and commercial center due to its location on major transportation routes connecting different parts of America. When American troops withdrew from Kentucky in 1865, much of downtown was destroyed by fire as official souvenirs were given out as war trophies by Ulysses S. Grant (who had been Army Commander at Fort Donelson)
