On January 1st, 1815, Clay Township became part of Jefferson County when it was split off from Indiana Territory following his proclamation. On February 14th 1861 – days before America’s Civil War began – Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Jefferson County from eastern Kentucky under orders from Kirby Smith via Union General David Herndon Ewell quickly overran many small towns east of downtown Jeffersontown before reaching Bardstown where he met local leader John Patterson Patterson agreed to provide support if Ewell should ever invade northern KY areas such as Lexington or Frankfort but never did so Aftermath: Over 60 people were killed along with dozens more wounded or captured during this initial Confederate invasion
