Louisville was founded in 1778 by James K. Polk and the city's first mayor, John Filley. The area that is now Louisville was part of Cherokee County until 1802 when it became part of Kentucky. In 1800, the United States Congress created Jefferson County in anticipation of a large population growth in Louisville due to its location as the capital of Kentucky and its role as a transportation hub for goods and passengers traveling between Kentucky and other states. The county's boundaries were expanded to include parts of today's Lexington, Bardstown, Fayetteville, Richmond Heights, Pikeville,and surrounding counties during the early 19th century. The discovery of coal in central Kentucky during the 1840s led to increased economic development in Louisville; however, railroads came to dominate much of eastern Kentucky during this time period and pulled down many small towns around Louisville as they transported coal samples throughout the region. This forced many people out of their homes and into poverty which helped contribute to Louisville's political stability during these times. The city also became known for its highly skilled workforce which helped make it one of America's most prosperous cities at this time. During World War II, Louisville played an important role as one of America's largest military production plants; however, much heavy damage was done to downtown buildings due to bombings conducted by German forces while Allied troops were fighting on the ground nearby. Despite this damage, Louisville remained an important figure within American society During the war years there were also several attempts by General Motors Corporation (now Ford) to move their manufacturing operations from Detroit Michigan back into what is now downtown Louisville but these plans never materialized because larger companies felt that downtown would be too costly and disruptive to their operations. In 1956-1957 a massive renovation project occurred inside City Hall which saw new Renowned architects design over 1200 sq ft (120 m2) of exhibit space including high end furniture for city leaders such as Mayor A C Kelley along with various public art pieces including murals executed by local artists such as David Stone Martin who painted murals depicting everyday life scenes within the cityscape while working alongside architect George Seaton who designed numerous iconic structures like Navy Memorial Stadium and State Capitol Building.) This renovation project also included renovation or addition onto nearly every major block in downtown including Third Street South between Main Street East & Scott Street North; Fourth Street North from just south side University Avenue eastward allthe way up until Just north side Allegheny Avenue - creating what is now known as "The Strip". Today visitors can find multiple restaurants/bars/nightlife options located on or near this revitalized section Of Downtown along with two large Macy’s stores located just east off Interstate 65 sandwiched between two smaller Sears stores giving Downtown quite a shopping district feel
