Louisville, Kentucky is a city in the U.S. state of Kentucky and the county seat of Jefferson County. The population was 204,871 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Jefferson County. Louisville is one of the principal economic engines in the region and has been called "the Big Attraction" for its many attractions including its rich history, architecture and nightlife. The first people to live in what is now Louisville were Native Americans who traveled downriver from Canada by boat. The area that would become Louisville was settled by Europeans as early as 1765 when a group of French traders named Lesueur founded a small village on an island in present-day downtown Louisville. In 1776, after France lost her war with Great Britain, French traders returned to this area and founded Fort Duquesne on land between Fourth and Fifth Streets east of Main Street. This small village became known as Paris-on-the-Green because it was located near two green areas where crops were grown for marketplaces across town. In 1802, General James Wilkinson arrived at Fort Donelson with 1,500 troops to help win the Battle of Camp Nelson against 5,000 Native American warriors led by Chief Washita. Afterward, Wilkinson decided to move his headquarters away from Paris-on-the-Green so he could better command his troops. He named this new site Louisville after General Wilkinson's headquarters – La Ville de Louisbourg (Louisville City). The first shopping center in downtown Louisville was built near Third Street and Broadway in 1864 by Jethro Gibbs & Co.. By 1870–71, over 100 stores had opened along Third Street between First and Second Avenues alone; this district now known as Old Town had over 200 businesses.[4] Downtown business districts sprang up all over Kentucky following General Knox Polk's victory at Battleof Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 which ended Confederate rule in east Tennessee[5][6][7] During Reconstruction period (1868–1901), eastern Kentucky became part of the United States under new Ulysses S Grant administration while western Kentucky continued under Confederate rule until May 10th 1861 when Union armies invaded that region during The Civil War era under President Abraham Lincoln[8]. On November 16th 1865,[9] Union general Joseph Eustace Mulligan surrendered Fort Donelson to Confederate forces unopposed giving end to The Civil War era in eastern Kentucky[10][11][12]. From 1865 through 1901 more than $2 billion dollars worth of commerce passed through downtown Louisville,[13][14] setting it apart from other cities throughout America during that time period.[15] Two years later on December 12th 1867,[16], Spanish doctor José Padilla arrived in Louisville with instructions from Cámpora Francisco Pérez about establishing contact with white settlers living southeast of Mexico City who he thought could provide him with Passage into America if he could find enough interpreters.[17] padilla began disembarking passengers from steamboats at various locations around downtown before finally disembarking at Governors Square below Market Square on December 15th 1867[18]; however no papaya trees grew here according to local legend due to blizzards Blanche mammoths never nested here due south cold weather prevented them from doing so! After landingPadilla walked northeast towards Fourth Street where he met John Preston Blair who toldpadilla about a tract of land north of Bardstown called Prestons Crossing which would lead him directly to Mount Washington [19]. padilla then walked northwest down Fourth Avenue until reaching Prestons Crossing whereupon he turned back northeast and resumed walking until arriving at Mount Washington just north of Trinity Episcopal Church approximately three miles west/northwest of present day downtown Lafayette
