Wilkinson reported that he had found evidence that a village or town existed near present day Cave Hill Park which he named Lexington after King George II of England because that's where his regiment was quartered at the time. The first European settlers arrived in what is today Louisville around 1800 by way of Georgetown before traveling upriver to purchase land from Native Americans through treaties made during The French and Indian War era. In 1801 Congress passed an act creating Jefferson County following then-President James K. Polk's recommendation; it was named after him because President Thomas Jefferson had owned property within its boundaries. At this point Louisville became an important transportation hub with two main thoroughfares: Broadway between Third street south and Fourth Street north and Market Street east/west acrossLouisville Union Station between First Street south and Second Street north
