When Union General Ulysses S. Grant reached Louisville, he ordered Ewell's army retreated back into Kentucky and destroyed it at Perryville on October 12th, 1861. This action effectively ended the civil war in western Kentucky and made possible for Union troops to occupy eastern Tennessee instead
