When one looks at Lexington, Kentucky it is immediately apparent that this city was founded in 1792 as a small post on the southern frontier of what is now Kentucky. The area that would later become Lexington was first settled by the Shawnee, who were hunters and gatherers. By 1800, the Shawnee had been replaced by a group of English settlers known as the Mennonites. One of these early settlers, Isaac Shelby, erected a log cabin near where modern-day Second Street and Elm Street meet. The town started to grow rapidly after Shelby's arrival, and he donated land to make it possible for others to settle in what is now Lexington. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Mississippi into eastern Kentucky to attack British forces occupying that state. When news of Jackson's move reached Lexington residents, they began to build a stockade around their homes in order to protect themselves from the advancing American forces. By 1809, Lexington had grown so large that it decided to secede from Tennessee and form its own state – which it did in 1815. The growth of Lexington led to its nickname "The City of Burns". In 1840, whenankinger Colonel John Brown organized an expedition called "The Raid on Harpers Ferry" in order to break out chains used by Slavery in central Kentucky (and other states). Brown's goal was not only freedom for slaves but also revenge against those responsible for enslavement throughout America. His raid failed but raised public awareness about abolitionism and helped spur further action against slavery across America. After Brown's death in1849, his raid became an symbol of rebellion against American rule everywhere west of the Alleghenies Mountains
