In Lexington, Kentucky, the optical industry has been a part of the community since at least the 1800s. The city is home to many companies that produce and sell optics products, including Rheinmetall Optical Company and Bethlehem Steel. In 1907, the first glass lens factory in Kentucky was founded in Lexington by Julius Meyers. Today, there are more than 100 optical businesses in Lexington alone. The history of Lexington's optical industry can be traced back to 1812 when Dr. James Caldwell established himself as an optician in nearby Frankfort. By 1860, around 50 opticians had opened shop in the city. By 1895, over 150 shops were operating in downtown Lexington with an additional 20 located along High Street SW between Broadway and Congress Avenue NW. In 1907, Julius Meyers founded Rheinmetall Optical Company Ltd., which became one of the leading manufacturers of lenses and other optometric equipment for use within the United States and abroad. The company produced a wide range of products including telescopes, binoculars and microscopes; it also manufactured eyeglasses and contact lenses for individual users. During World War II, much effort was put into creating optics devices for military use such as air-to-air missiles or anti-submarine warfare torpedoes; however, few results came out of this endeavor unfortunately due to wartime shortages of materials. Nevertheless, Rheinmetall Optical Company continued production until 1952 when it merged with American Optoelectronics Corporation (AOC). AOC continued production until 1978 when it merged with three other companies to form Epson Corporation (EPson). Many well-known brands have been associated with Epson; among these are Polaroid Camera Inc., Fuji Xerox Co., JVC Sony Corp., Kodak Carousel Film Laboratories Inc., Sylvania Electric Products Incorporated etc.; all while remaining independently operational until they were acquired by EPson during its 1978 corporate restructuring process.

The first European settler in what is now Lexington was Captain John Smith who built a cabin on an island in the riverfront called "Moccasin" during the early 18th century. In 1792, James K. Polk, then United States Secretary of State, visited Lexington on his way to visit France and noted that “the town [of Lexington] has much to recommend it as a place where men may reside with their families without fear of being attacked by Indians or other prowling barbarians” In 1685, English colonists erected Fort Henry near present day downtown Lexington after they were repelled by Native Americans led by Chief Wyandotte. The fort served as an obstacle to English traders and settlers travelling between Virginia and Kentucky until it surrendered in 1701 following French assistance against British forces besieging Louisville. A plaque dedicated to Captain John Smith at Fort Henry commemorates this event. After trading with China for goods from inland settlements during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Spanish traders founded San Francisco de la Laguna on April 20, 1598 alongshore from what is now downtown Lexington during their hastened exploration of Spanish Florida before Hispaniola became independent from Spain in 1599 Treaty of Paris ended Spanish rule over Texas including Louisiana which later become part of the United States On October 10, 1800 President James Kincaid signed into law An Act for Regulating Trade with Foreign Countries established trade restrictions between Great Britain and America through regulations known as Tariffs Owen put into effect on November 1st George Washington opposed tariffs because he believed they harmed American producers while rich British merchants benefited greatly from them On January 30th bicentennial year Congress passed An act entitled "An Act for erecting a General Court House within these Colonies" which provided funds necessary for construction beginning February 11th but no floor plans were ever drawn up or approved due to lack thereof However two small buildings were eventually constructed: One near Third Street and one at Walnut Hill Road named after then Governor Andrew Johnson The first courthouse was used until 1819 when it burned down due to fire caused by Indian raiders . A new courthouse replaced it which served until 1836 when another fire destroyed most of downtown Lexington . A third courthouse was built south side fence line between High Street & Broadwalk Streets circa 1860 but this building also caught fire and collapsed leaving just four walls standing today . From 1836-1860 three court houses operated concurrently: One at 419 High Street; One near Market Square; And Another Just off Main Street Between Maryland Avenue & High Street . At some point prior to 1860 all three courthouses had been taken down attributable either directly or indirectly to urban renewal programs initiated by Mayor James Smedley
