In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Kentucky to overthrow Union forces and capture the state capital of Louisville; however, Confederate General Jubal Early prevented this from happening and helped convince the Union authorities in Louisville to surrender instead. On July 15th of that year, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 34th President of the United States over Democrat James Buchanan; after taking office on January 20th of 1863, Lincoln issued Executive Order 10606 which ordered all citizens of Lexington to leave their homes until further notice due to an impending army invasion by Major-General Andrew Johnson (later known as Andrew Johnson). Lincoln soon found that Johnson had no intention of invading Kentucky – instead he wanted to move his army headquarters westward so that they could better resist Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of Northern Virginia – but many residents still refused to leave their homes “under any circumstances” despite orders from Lincoln himself. This situation quickly escalated into open violence when some residents began throwing rocks at soldiers who were trying to enter their homes; eventually only about 50 people were left in Lexington before evening fell and orders arrived for all remaining citizens to leave again for fear that more violence would break out if they stayed put. As night fell more troops arrived from outside Lexington with orders not to fire unless provoked – but when one soldier accidentally did shoot a civilian during this time period (the shooting led to four deaths), things started getting really heated and there evolved into what is now known as the Battle Royal: thousands upon thousands of rounds were fired by both sides without any result other than scores of humanized casualties on either side.; finally around 2am local time (after hourslong standoff) an arbiter was chosen through a drawing process with Cryer commanding 46 guns while Johnson had 12 cannons; both leaders then withdrew their armies back into Fort Donelson where they camped for the night pending decisions being made about what next steps should be taken
