On November 7th of that year, elections were held for delegates to create a new government for Kansas which resulted in Kenedy becoming president of Kansas Territory with authority over all aspects of life including education and land ownership within that territory. Today, much of downtown Lexington still retains its early American architecture with Federal style buildings dating back to before World War II such as One Hundred South Main Street which features Art Deco architecture typical of cities at that time. Other notable buildings include Old State House (now used as office space), Maryland Hall (now home to Eastern Kentucky University), Trinity Episcopal Church (built between 1875 and 1887), McCracken County Courthouse (built between 1907 and 1915) and local business districts such as Fifth Third Bank Building (now home to ATK Bank), Pemberton Drug Store(now Home Depot) and Lowrey's Department Store(currently JCPenney).
In 1795, the first white settler in Lexington was James K. Polk. In 1801, John Brown and his men attacked a militia detachment at Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The town's leaders responded with a boycott of their goods until Brown was hanged.
