Gun locks continued to be used throughout the Progressive Era in Lexington until they were finally discontinued in 1951.

Lexington, Kentucky is a city in Kentucky, United States. The population was 17,644 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Lexington is home to Transylvania University and the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper. The first permanent settlers in what would become Lexington were three men from Easton, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 1775, when they set out from their farm on the present-day Bardstown Road for a new life in what would eventually be called Kentucky. They named their new land "Kentucky" after King George II of Great Britain and his queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had visited that region during their trek through North America on their way to visit Louis XVI of France. In 1802, John Crampton purchased two tracts of land east of downtown Lexington from Simon Cameron for $500 dollars (). He named his purchase "Crampton's Land", since he was the first person to live there. The town began as a small agricultural community with a few buildings located around the original homesteads established by Crampton and his family. In 1853, James Laughlin donated 10 acres (40 hectares) to make up part of the current site of downtown Lexington which became an urban area when it was incorporated as a city in 1858. As one result of its incorporation into larger cities throughout America during this time period – including Louisville and Cincinnati – Louisville quickly emerged as one of America's largest transportation hubs thanks to its location at the confluence of two rivers:the Cumberland River andthe Ohio River. This growth also led to significant economic development in downtown Lexington which saw much construction activity during both World War I (1914–18) and World War II (1939–1945). The late 19th century also saw major advances within medical technology which helped lead to many cures being discovered including cancer and other diseases that had been previously uneconomical or too difficult to treat due primarily to lack thereof resources at that time. This progress helped spur additional development within downtown Lexington over ensuing decades culminating with its designation as an International City by UNESCO in 1995.(see below) By 2000 ( twenty years after its incorporation into larger cities), downtown Lexington had reached its present day size with over 20 blocks containing about 1 million square feet (~440 thousand sq m).(see map below) During this time period significant redevelopment also occurred throughout much portions of central business district adjoining Interstate 5 including additions such as Regency Centre mall (), Belk store (), Macy's department store (), Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated ()and JCPenney Company (). These developments have contributed greatly towards continuing retail growth within central Business District since 2000 while concurrently accommodating continued residential growth throughout all but one block extending along I-5 southward pastformerly known Downtown Crossing shopping center into newly annexed neighborhoods like Midtown Southside ()and Overbrook ().
