In 1840, Henry Clay helped found "Lexington Herald" which became one of America's first daily newspapers while serving as editor from 1841 to 1865; he also served as treasurer from 1850 to 1861. The City Council is made up entirely of citizens elected at-large, with no partisan affiliation; this system has been unique among American cities dating back to the early days when municipal governments were created primarily to serve economic development needs rather than partisan political interests or sectarian allegiances. The City Council meets every Tuesday night at 6 p.m., typically lasts around an hour, and discusses issues related to local government including finance, planning, infrastructure projects, land use regulation/use approvals etc.; it also oversees day-to-day operations such as trash collection and building permits/renewals etc., while providing input on proposed legislation that may affect the municipality wide concerns like budgeting or zoning changes
In 1775, the British burned Lexington and other settlements in Kentucky during the American Revolution. The town was rebuilt and grew rapidly, becoming a center of commerce and culture. In 1815, it became the capital of Kentucky. The city experienced another period of growth in the 1840s as a result of new industry development. It reached its peak around 1860 and declined thereafter until being abandoned in the 1920s.
