In 1792, Kentucky became a part of the United States of America. In 1801, President James K. Polk created the Territory of Kentucky and added it to the Union. The area that is now Lexington was first settled by people who were escaping religious persecution in Europe. The first residential area in Lexington was built on land that was donated by Colonel John Sevier. The town of Lexington grew rapidly during the 1800s due to its location between Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee. During this time, Lexington became known as "the Athens of the West". In 1819, General Andrew Jackson appointed John Brown as commander of an army that was invading Missouri. Brown's forces were unsuccessful and he retreated back to Kentucky. In 1825, General David Wallace assigned Colonel Nicholas Clark to lead an expedition into northern Virginia in order to capture whiskey smugglers operating from that state. Clark's force found and killed several hundred men and women before being repulsed at Battle of Monacacy Hill. When martial law was put into effect in Louisville after the February 14th Riot, Governor Donelson ordered Lexington residents to leave their homes for fear they would join Clarks' rebels if they didn't comply with his orders. Many did not leave until after nightfall when clashes started between militia and local residents ensued which ended with one man dead and several injured including a young girl named Betsy Ross who documented her experience below: "After midnight I heard firing from three or four miles off; there seemed no end to it; so I went out [to see] what it meant." When morning came around there were only six or seven bodies left behind amongst scores of houses destroyed or damaged by gunfire; these are still commemorated today within downtown Lexington as "theFiring Line". During Reconstruction (1868-1877), many African Americans began moving into Kentucky because free labor had become available under newly established Republican regimes following the American Civil War. This influx led to increased competition for jobs among white farmers and businesses alike which caused some tension within Lexington's black community over access to education, housing, health care, etc.; however these issues eventually dissipated once new black leaders took control in post-Reconstruction times including Reverend King Coleman Youngblood who served as Mayor from 1931–1945).
The first permanent English settlers in Lexington, Kentucky were the Reverend John Fenton and his family. The town was founded by British colonists in 1785 as a trading post on the Ohio River. In 1801, Lexington became a state capital and adopted the Statute of Mayors. In 1825, James K. Polk was elected president of the United States and he visited Lexington to preside over its incorporation into the federal government. After his visit, Lexington reverted back to its original name of Fentonstown. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Springfield, Illinois and Lexington became known as the " cradle of American democracy." In 1872, Kentucky passed a bill legalizing liquor sales with a 12-ounce bottle being legal for purchase at most stores statewide. The following year saw another milestone when Louisville opened its own distillery, becoming one of the country's first Distilleries Quartermasters General. In 1903, Edwin Forrest starred in an unsuccessful attempt to become mayor of Lexington opposite William McKinley. In 1924,KY Congressman James Meeks (D) introduced legislation creating an industrial park adjacent to downtown that would house heavy industry such as chemical plants and meatpacking facilities while also providing jobs for local residents. The bill failed but would be resurrected again eight years later when Meeks ran for office once again on behalf of this new industrial park proposal which he successfully campaigned on
